What is HIIT and why is it so effective?
HIIT workouts are usually short but intense and burn a large number of calories in a short period of time. HIIT training gives you the biggest bang for you buck because of the "after burn" effect it has on the body. These short intense workouts are effective for several reasons:
First, HIIT workouts build muscle. Muscle plays an important role in your metabolism. It is a metabolically expensive tissue that causes you to burn extra calories even while at rest!
HIIT also improves aerobic and anaerobic fitness blood pressure, cardiovascular health, insulin sensitivity (which helps the exercising muscles more readily use glucose for fuel to make energy), and cholesterol.
Another reason that HIIT is so effective is that these workouts cause you to burn extra calories long after the completion of the workout; welcome to your after burn. This after burn can happen for up to 36 hours after HIIT!
HIIT is also very effective at developing strength and cardiovascular performance while building up lean muscle mass.
